The Koopman Family Farm is the home of KFF Alpacas and Bill, Emi, Lliam, Hunter, Aidan and Cara. We are located in the northwest corner of Indiana in a city named La Porte. While we did not call this home at the start of our alpaca business in the spring of 2004, it is where we landed when the time came to find a farm to grow our herd of award winning, colored American suri alpacas. Our herd expanded to include huacaya alpacas in 2010. We were lucky enough to find 65 acres that we have been converting to Indiana’s premier suri & huacaya alpaca farm. KFF currently houses over 50 suri alpacas, 25 huacaya alpacas and 1 suri llama. We offer sales, breeding, and boarding. We take care to monitor our herd’s nutrition, and that begins with the highest quality forage. In addition to the 16 acres of fenced pastures, we have 40 acres of premium orchard grass growing that we cut and bale for our alpacas.
Since we are both Doctors of Chiropractic, we strive to raise our alpacas and our family in a very holistic manner. We have adapted our training in human nutrition to ensure that our alpacas are eating and digesting the nutrients they need to maximize their potential. We test our soil annually and each cutting of hay so that we can monitor the nutrients that our alpacas have available. We also use and sell several natural products for alpacas or other livestock.
Our Farm Goals Are:
1) Breed the highest quality, genetically diverse seed stock suri and huacaya alpacas.
2) Selectively breed suri and huacaya alpacas with positive attributes in conformation, fiber and maternal traits with the use of EPDs (Expected Progeny Differences). Of particular interest in our breeding program are overall conformational soundness, and maximum production of commercially valuable fiber. While there are many important traits, we put the utmost importance on reproductive soundness.
3) Assist both new and experienced breeders in improving their herd nutrition.
4) Share our knowledge and provide support not only for our clients but for any alpaca breeder.
5) Offer the highest quality of care for our client’s alpacas whether they are here for a breeding or for the long term boarding.
6) Help the American alpaca breeders to develop a viable, sustainable fiber industry.
